There are some vacations where returning to your hotel multiple times a day is easy. A trip to Chicago isn’t one of those vacations. Because the city is so large, if you end up halfway across town and return to your hotel, you aren’t going to want to head back to the subway station.
When you’re vacationing in Chicago, it’s much better to stay out for the day and return to your hotel in the evening. Just make sure you’re ready for the day with these tips.
Only Carry the Necessities
If you’re going to be out for the day, you may be tempted to pack a bag with everything you might need. Although it may be nice to have everything within arm’s reach, you’re going to get tired fast when you lug around a heavy backpack.
Instead, carry only the necessities. That means things like your phone, wallet, room key, and maybe a tube of lip balm. A collapsible water bottle is much easier to carry than a large plastic or aluminum bottle.
Need to bring an outfit to change into for the evening? Or maybe you’re stuck with your luggage because you can’t check into your hotel room until later? Store your belongings at a convenient location so you can access them whenever you want without having to lug it all around town.
Prep for the Day
You don’t want to end up having a great time across town and realize you have to return to your hotel because you forgot something. Make sure you’re ready by prepping for the day.
Getting ready in the morning includes doing things like:
- Take a shower and style your hair
- Put on makeup that will last all day
- Eat a healthy breakfast
- Pack a snack or two in your bag
There are other things you should do if you want to make sure you’re ready for the day. Make sure you get a good night of sleep so you have the energy to make it all day long. You can also make sure you don’t forget anything by getting your clothes and the belongings you’ll need ready to go the night before.
A day in Chicago isn’t a walk on the beach. They don’t call it the Windy City for nothing!
It is important to know what to wear if you’re going to be out all day. That means knowing how to dress in layers if you’re visiting in the winter, but you will also want to dress in layers if you’re visiting during other times of the year too.
The city can get windy, and being surrounded by buildings means you’re going to spend a good chunk of your day in the shade. In addition, it can be chilly in the morning and in the evening, even if it is forecasted to be warm during the noon hour.
No matter what time of year you visit, if you want to stay out and about in the city all day, you should definitely bring a jacket or a sweater.
Wear the Right Shoes
You may want to look stylish while you’re wandering around Chicago, but you don’t want to pay the price later. Skip the sandals, shoes that haven’t been broken in, and heels and opt for comfortable walking shoes instead.
If you wear a pair of comfortable sneakers, you don’t have to worry about blisters or sore feet halfway through the day. They will also make sure your feet feel good enough to get up early and do it all over again the next day.
Plan a Few Breaks
There’s a lot that goes into planning a stress-free vacation. You’ve earned a break by the time you get to Chicago. Don’t squander it by making your day stressful!
Just because you aren’t taking the time to return to your hotel for a mid-afternoon siesta doesn’t mean you should go, go, go all day long! If you want to make it from morning until night, you have to plan breaks into your day.
Take a late morning stroll along the Navy Pier or spend an hour at a coffee shop boosting your mood and your energy. By taking small breaks you can ensure you don’t go back to your hotel earlier than you wanted.
There are so many fun things to do and see in Chicago! Make sure you are able to see and do everything you want by following the tips on this list.
